It is, to my taste, an excellent CD, which keeps the general tone of this tag, as to "modernize" the sound of Cash, to suit the music of the moment.
The proof is the incorporation of 'Going by the book ", a hard rock style totally alien to the customs of Cash. The issue is not my personal taste, but I recognize that, as a demonstration of the adaptation of Cash to that modality hard rock, is an excellent example. Of course, Cash also proved to be able to move these rails, if necessary.
Remember, outside of what this record, which at that period, Cash had shared with the group U2 (at the time, at its peak) remembered some versions of The Wanderer, certainly consistent with this observation.
I think the best song on the album, or at least the most representative, is the first, "The greatest cowboy all them all." This is a very lively country version (Country-rock) of a very successful at that time, he had several covers and used in several live shows (remember Turku Finland 1991). Is the hit of the album, no doubt.
Then, we stop in versions very, very rock, country themes such as Hey Porter (one of his classic) and Easy Rider, which can integrate any program of some rock DJ. -
The country spirit of Cash is also evident, with its reference to "hobo" (stowaway lurking trains), on the topic The hobo song, and the nice country ballad "I'll go somewhere and sing my song again" .
"Beans for breakfast", "Wanted Man" (also much-hyped) and the album's title track, "The mystery of life" roads passing intermediate, filling the highlights that were already mentioned.
In short, a very interesting album that shows a modern Cash, but without losing its traditional essence.

Es, a mi gusto, un excelente CD, que mantiene la tónica general de esta etiqueta, en cuanto a "modernizar" el sonido de Cash, para adecuarlo a la música del momento.
La prueba de ello, es la incorporaciòn de "Going by the book", un tema de rock pesado, estilo totalmente ajeno a las costumbres de Cash. El tema, no es de mi gusto personal, pero hay que reconocer que, como demostración de la adaptación de Cash a esa modalidad rockera, es una excelente muestra. Por supuesto, Cash demostró estar capacitado también para transitar esos carriles, si fuera necesario.
Recordemos, fuera de lo que es este disco, que en ese período, había compartido con el grupo U2 (en esos momentos, en su cima) algunas recordadas versiones de The Wanderer, seguramente en concordancia con esta observación.
Creo que la mejor canción del disco, o al menos, la más representativa, es la primera, "The greatest cowboy all them all". Se trata de una versión country muy movida (Country-rock) de un tema muy exitoso en ese momento, que tuvo varios covers y se utilizó en varios shows en vivo (recordar Turku Finlandia 1991). Es el hit del disco, sin dudas.
Luego, debemos detenernos en versiones muy, pero muy rockeras, de temas country como Hey Porter (uno de sus clásicos) y Easy Rider, las cuales bien pueden integrar cualquier programa rockero de un DJ.-
Es espíritu country de Cash queda igualmente en evidencia, con su referencia al "hobo" (polizón que merodea los trenes), en el tema The hobo song, y en la agradable balada country "I'll go somewhere and sing my song again".
"Beans for breakfast", "Wanted man" (también muy promocionada) y la canción que da nombre al disco, "The mistery of life", transitan caminos intermedios, rellenando los puntos salientes que fueron los ya reseñados.
En definitiva, un muy interesante disco que muestra a un Cash aggiornado, pero sin perder su escencia tradicional.
