Well, well ... American IV. - The best album of Johnny Cash? Maybe so. The truth is that writing a comment on this record compels me so much respect that I have taken almost a week in encouraging me to tackle the task. This album is also being to the last published album in the life of Johnny Cash, is just great. Fantastic. Unbeatable. Enjoyable. Sense, humane, eloquent. Each song, each version is a work of art and different from previous ones that were known. None deserves to be left out of the comment.
It also refers to several cover songs, songs popularized by other artists, but, after being interpreted by Cash, become characteristic of the black man. As Trent Reznor said pathetically, the original singer of Hurt: "After listening to Cash singing this, I feel I've lost my girlfriend, this song is not mine." -
The same goes for the Beatle classic "In my life", which sounds much better and believable in the voice of a Cash larger than the small voice of the young Beatles. And equally true Personal Jesus, which is much nicer here than in the interpretation of Depeche Mode, the group tecno that popularized this song. When Cash sings, the others are silent. -
I begin? Well, come on.
When the man comes around, with an introduction talked, is a hymn that describes the cruelty that man can take. His pace is moved, and his message, pathetic. With much justice, this song gave the album its name.
Hurt: a confession song, where Cash is shown naked, with his injuries to the eye, with the blows that life gave him on his face, showing his pain, his tears, his repentance. I think it's the song for his extramo humanism, designed to Cash to immortality.
Give my love to rose is a sad country ballad, Bridge over trouble waters is another lament grey. First time ever I see your face shows an almost sinister version where Cash's voice is everything. Danny Boy is the most heartfelt of all interpreted as before. Cash has no vocal power here when he recorded for Columbia was the first version of this song, but, as we said, this is most felt. Disfrutable Desperado is 100%, 10 points for the duet with Nick Cave in the Hank Williams classic I So Lonesome I Could Cry, and I think the better end of this work is the great version of The Streets of Laredo, a wrenching drama western that shows the wounds that left humanity that way of life guns in hand. Cash knowing that they were before the last moments of his life, fired with the hopeful "We'll meet again" do not know where or when, but I know we'll meet again someday.
You do not know, dear Johnny, as I'm waiting for that day.
Vaya vaya... American IV.- ¿El mejor disco de Johnny Cash? Quizá lo sea. Lo cierto es que escribir un comentario sobre este disco me impone tanto respeto, que he tardado casi una semana en animarme a afrontar la tarea. Es que este disco, además de ser el último publicado en vida de Johnny Cash, es sencillamente genial. Fantástico. Inmejorable. Disfrutable. Sentido, humano, elocuente. Cada canción, cada versión, es una obra de arte y diferente de las anteriores que se conocían. Ninguna merece quedar afuera del comentario.
También se recurre a varios covers, canciones popularizadas por otros artistas, pero que, luego de ser interpretadas por Cash, pasan a ser propias del hombre de negro. Como patéticamente lo dijo Trent Reznor, el cantante original de Hurt: "Luego de escuchar a Cash cantando este tema, siento que he perdido a mi novia: esta canción ya no es mía".-
Lo mismo vale para el clásico Beatle "In my live", que suena mucho mejor y creible en la voz de un Cash mayor, que en la vocecilla de los jóvenes Beatles. Y igualmente ocurre con Personal Jesus, que es mucho más agradable aquí que en la interpretación de Depeche Mode, el grupo Tecno que la popularizó. Cuando Cash canta, los demás se callan.-
¿Empiezo? bueno, vamos.
When the man comes around, con una introducción charlada, es un verdadero himno que describe la crueldad que el ser humano puede asumir. Su ritmo es movido, y su mensaje, patético. Con mucha justicia, esta canción dió al disco su apellido.
Hurt: una canción confesión, donde Cash se muestra desnudo, con sus heridas a la vista, con los golpes que la vida le dió en su rostro, mostrando su dolor, su llanto, su arrepentimiento. Creo que es la canción que, por su extramo humanismo, proyectó a Cash a la inmortalidad.
Give my love to rose es una triste balada country, Bridge over trouble waters es otro lamento gris. First time ever I see your face muestra una versión casi tenebrosa, donde la voz de Cash es todo. Danny Boy es la versión más sentida de todas las ya interpretadas antes. Cash no tiene aquí la fuerza vocal que tenía cuando grabó para Columbia su primera versión de esta canción, pero, como decíamos, aquí es más sentida. Desperado es 100% disfrutble; 10 puntos para el dueto con Nick Cave en el clásico de Hank Williams I so lonesome I could cry, y creo que el mejor cierre de este trabajo, es la genial versión de The Streets of Laredo, un drama del western que, desgarrantemente, muestra las heridas que dejó a la humanidad esa forma de vivir revólver en mano. Sabedor Cash de que estaba ante los últimos momentos de su vida, se despide con el esperanzado "We'll meet again": no se donde ni cuando, pero sé que volveremos a vernos algún día.
No sabes, querido Johnny, cuanto estoy esperando ese día.
